The Pre-MOOC Activities are designed to connect you with your Wayfinders and other MOOC participants. It will also help lay the groundwork for what we'll explore during LOER12. This section contains plenty of information and opportunities for you to participate, so pace yourself over the next few days!

Pre-MOOC Activities to Complete


  1. Decide how you will participate in LOER12.
    You can decide how you want to keep the pulse inside your respective contributions online--this can be a blog, a podcast or video, or even a screencast with presentation charts - a discussion - anything you like.
    • Provide us with the link, and we'll put it on the Sharing page. The earlier the better, but you can do this at any point during the next few weeks.

  2. Introduce yourself in the Discussions area so we can learn more about you.

  3. Connect with us using the Twitter hashtag #LOER12, and start talking.
    Use #LOER12 to connect with us (your Wayfinders) and with other MOOCers. Consider the following questions and Tweet (using #LOER12), blog, or however you chose to communicate:
    • What are your expectations from Micro-MOOC?
    • What opportunities do you foresee to make use of OER in your own work?
    • What are the three most important issues/needs you feel you need to support the use of OER.

  4. Explore the information below regarding What are OER?
    Doing so will set the framework for the remainder of the Micro-MOOC.

  5. Check out the additional resources on understanding OER.
    Also consider becoming apart of an OER community (a few of which we're provided links to in this section).

  6. Create a livebinder to organize your OER.
    As you start building your resource library, you'll need a location to store your OER. A livebinder will help you accomplish this.

Understanding What "OER" Means


OER (Open Educational Resources) is a term used to describe educational materials that are free to use, re-use, and share.

The term OER has been used to refer to learning materials such as:

This is made possible by using open licenses. An open license license allows you to use that resource without paying for a license. A few examples of open licenses are Creative Commons; Open Publication License; GNU Free Documentation License.

Why do people provide stuff for free?

Because this is about education with sharing and collaboration being major components of learning.

What does and OER look like?

OER can be in the form of, well, anything--from a Learning Management System (LMS), to a course or module, to a great looking video, game or a couple of simple images. But remember, while the resources may be free, always give a credit to the person or location from which you access the OER.
